"The basic strength of a transmutation circle is the nature of the shape itself. The circle represents the circulation of power. By drawing it, that power can be evoked. By understanding this circulation of power and the laws that govern it, you can harness it for yourself. And one who works within this system of flow to create new things, that is the true alchemist..." — Izumi Curtis, Fullmetal Alchemist, episode 27.
The function of a transmutation. Such is the case with Roy Mustang, who uses gloves made of a fictional material called ignition cloth (some people like to compare it and refer it to another fictional cloth called pyrodex cloth) to create a spark when he snaps his fingers; by having a circle drawn on the glove he is able to use alchemy to increase the oxygen concentration in the air and create flames, or even an explosion. In many cases, transmutation circles that are on gloves, or tattooed on hands, require the alchemist to do something in order to initiate the reaction, while people with alchemically-adorned bracelets, pendants, or gauntlets may perform any of a number of different movements, depending on the article itself and the alchemy circle placed on the article. However for me, I have the ability to do alchemy without any transmutation circles. I simply have to clap his hands to initiate the effect. There are other people who can do alchemy the same way. Each of them has seen "The Gate" which is said to hold all the truths of the universe and alchemy alike. Typically, in accordance with equivalent exchange, the alchemist puts the matter which he wants to transmute in front of, or inside the circle, or simply draws the circle where the transmutation is to take place. You can see a simple beginner's Transmutation Circle here.

Edward Elric stepped into the classroom and stepped up to the plate. Students have arrived and it was a fair class. At least... fair. Number. Ed scratched his head and tapped on the blackboard. "Okay. Umm, I am Edward Elric, your... Professor for Alchemy. Err, I suppose you can call me... Ed. Or Edward. Or, Professor Ed. I prefer the first one... though..." Ed coughed again to clear his throat. "Alright... Let's get on to the basics of Alchemy here. What is Alchemy? Alchemy is magic. And in my world, Magic is Science. And Science threatens the minds of the innocent. People were put into danger because they vernture too deep into the mysteries of Alchemy, ignoring their laws and breaking it. And it costs them much." Edward touched his right arm for some unknown reason. Both his hands were gloved and there were black ribbons tied around his sleeves. "Now, Alchemy, is also a type of Transfiguration. Just that it involves more knowlege of creating something, and giving something in return. You cannot create someting in alchemy without giving something of equal value in turn. Which means, if you want to transmute a rock into a steel rod..." Edward picked up a rock about the size of his fist. "Now, this rock is a normal rock, found near the lake. It is made of earth, ammonia, iron and carbon. What do you need to make a steel rod? You'd need Ammonia, Iron and Carbon. For that, you have to draw them out of the rock. How do we do that? Firstly, you have to construct." Edward drew a simple transmutation circle on the table. "Those who can't see, come closer..." "This is a simple transmutation circle. Now you place the rock in the middle... and now its about how you activate the transmutation circle. You have to feel the circle within your grasp..." Ed said and placed his hands on the circle's lines. "and fuse your body's energy with it and let it flow through you into the circle itself." BASHOOM! With that, the circle started to shine, and the rock started crackling, and a small knife clattered onto the table as the light and smoke cleared away. "I could only make a knife, for there's not much iron and other stuff for me to use there..." Edward smiled at the class. "I will let all of you try Alchemy next lesson, and we can move further into it. Perhaps next time you can all do large scale transmutations, I don;t know. And I can explain to you... something about me that I hope none of you would ever stumble upon." Edward bowed to the class. "There will be no homework for today, but next lesson you won't be so lucky." Edward packed up his things and smiled at the class again, swinging back his long, blonde hair that was tied up into a ponytail. "Alright, thanks!" [ THIS WAS A LESSON ON ALCHEMY I POSTED LAST YEAR!!!! xD ]

Napoleon watched as edward changed a rock into a knife. This got Napoleon thinking; - if this rock can make a single knife, surely a boulder could make several, or even a sword.
- and was it made using magic??
- what happened to the un-used ingrediant of the rock, earth.
- does the knife, having been made by magic, and, obvoisly, earth, have the wrath of earth, or at least the power to summon the wrath of earth.
- if you used alchemy on some muddy wood, could you create a wand or staff with the power of earth and water (mud containing earth and water)
- would it be possible to create a wand/staff that had the power of all five elements
- was that how Antioch Peverell created the elder wand
- was it possible that all those evil wizards of the past had simply cast aside the power of alchemy, the one thing that would guarantee them unrivaled and supreme power for all eternity??
- would the next one be so foolish?
Napoleon decided that he must listen, he must learn, because only when you understand something can you defeat it.

- Yes, depending on the amount of iron in grams in the boulder. If there's also carbon in it, you can make steel. - No. But until a certain point it is... - It sinks back to the ground. - No. Alchemy only shapes, it does not GIVE. - You can create a wand, but there will be no powers given to it. - No... - I don't think so, but he might be an alchemist who COULD do that. - alchemy is a form of science, and so, it must follow the natural laws. That does not make one invincible just because one has the power to use alchemy. Even me, for an instance, get hurt alot. But in the world of alchemy, there's always a fabled philosopher's stone. It gives you things without you having to sacrifice something in return, which is going against one of alchemy's greatest laws - Equivelant Exchange. Nicholas Flamel must be an alchemist to wrought such a stone. - Next one? If great evil gets hold of Alchemy, I would quit being a hero always. The Homunculus - artificial human beings created by humans through failed human transmutation, and has a heart made of a philosopher's stone, is immortal. But they lack the ability to use alchemy. If they could use alchemy, like the Homunculus, Wrath (FMA Anime), I think I'd have died... If only he wasn't so childish, and missed many chances to kill me.

Neville sat there watching Ed make a knife out of a rock. "So its the same thing as the Equivalent Exchange?" asked Neville looking at the knife in the transmutation circle still looking a little confused. then he started taking noted what Ed put on the bored and made a sketch of the transmutation circle.

Kaelyn entered the class from the back, bowing slightly in apology. It seemed almost wierd now her friend was teaching her Alchemy in the classroom. Stifling a smile, she kept it to herself. Hurrying to sit down, she continued to listen to his little speech. Upon seeing the circle, she copied it down onto her paper. A sudden thought struck her, she took out a piece of graphite and put it into the circle. Perhaps i could change it into a diamond, well they are made of carbon.
Smiling to herself, she snuck a glance at the class. Great, no one is looking. and fuse your body's energy with it and let it flow through you into the circle itself Repeating Edward's words in mind, she concentrated on the circle. After ten minutes, there was still nothing. "Darn.." She scolded under her breath. "Why doesnt it work like this." Its alright, listen more, ill ask later. Her optimistic demeanor took over as she continued to listen.
